jobs for november. it is good news for investors, believe it or not. 25 days away from the fiscal cliff, those new jobs number could also be good for president obama and might end up giving him some of the leverage dana was talking about. listen to this. >> president obama's argument has been that the economy is doing well enough it could handle a tax hike. if the economy were in recession as we saw last time, then he would be reluctant to lift that top rate. if the economy is growing sharply, then if -- the -- some damage from lifting the top rate then maybe the economy can afford it. now the gdp growth number is not as strong as the jobs report. but if we a weak jobs report, then i think the president would have a really, really hard time getting people, even moderate democrats, to increase the marginal rate. the fact it is a strong report, i think, puts wind in the sails. >> wind in his sails. that's not necessarily what the speaker was saying. let's get straight total son kosik live at the new york stock exchange. >> raw numbers. what is the dow doing? >> we are not seeing the wind

when the president calls for all the new taxes in the fiscal cliff negotiation, mr. president we already have a big tax increase that will hit on january 2nd. that of course is the obamacare taxes. you mentioned one of them, the tax on medical devices and medical equipment, bill, which i agree with, congressman price. that will reduce innovation and will reduce the kind of invention and new products we need to keep people healthier. in addition to that, bill, don't forget there is something called 3.8% investment tax surcharge in the obamacare bill that starts in january. one of the things that the president says is a little misleading i will only raise tax rates back where they were in the clinton era. you heard him say that a lot of times, bill. he is not including that 3.8% investment tax that will raise the taxes higher than they were in the '90s. bill: i see. seeing it right here. if you make more than $200,000. >> that's right. bill: if you're in a household of 250 or above, subject to a new 3.8% tax. well, you know, ultimately republicans argue this is coming down on the b

. >>> let's go to jessica yellin, she's getting new information about the fiscal cliff stand-off, what are you learning? >> reporter: i'm learning that president obama and house speaker john boehner had a phone conversation late today. we do not have a fiscal deal. there's been no significant movement as a result of this, it's meaningful, the two men have not spoken in a week exactly. their last phone call was last wednesday, as you know, speaker boehner presented a plan on monday and after that was rejected by the president. in an interview, there was no communication between the white house and republicans until this phone call between these two men. wolf, this comes the same day that secretary geithner said publicly for the first time, that the u.s. would be willing to go over the cliff if republicans do not agree to raise tax rates on the top two percent of earners. it's my understanding that republicans have not agreed to raise those rates and the white house is not negotiating essentially, wolf, until they see republicans make that move. >> jeszic ka, the things obviously could b

talking about the fiscal cliff and this is framed around that point, in the new year, with the bush year tax cuts expire, there's a housing tax cut that's going to expire-- this is where we got with the bubble. could we be headed back there. explain what housing is going to expire. >> this is called the mortgage debt relief act. put in place in 2007. distressed home owners selling in a short sales. that principal has been forgiven, maybe they sold for $100,000, and maybe it was 150,000, the 50,000 they don't have to pay taxes on it. with this act expiring that means they're going to have to pay taxes. this is staggering, the average short sale looking at about $95,000 is lost when a short sale happens and looking at the taxes if this cut is expired. people owe as much as $33,000 on principal balance that nobody is recouping. >> the government says we need the revenue. will it bring revenue. >> technically 1.3 billion dollars in revenue not very much. i think the the implications of-- 1.3 billion dollars versus what this could do to the housing market, actually to the economy as a whole,
